3 Tips for Starting Strong at Dewey’s

Author:  Lindsey Beggin McCormick, Recruiter

When I started at Dewey’s on October 30, 2011, I was just looking for a job. What I found was a team that treated me with warmth, kindness, and hospitality, and a workplace that felt like home almost instantly.

I started as a server, moved into bartending, learned the kitchen, managed shifts—and somewhere along the way, I stopped thinking of Dewey’s as just a job. It became my community. A place where I was growing, being held accountable, having fun, and doing work that actually mattered.

In 2015, I took a full-time role at a nonprofit I was passionate about. Even then, I couldn’t stay away; I kept picking up bartending and manager shifts because I missed the people, the rhythm, and the energy.

Years later, I moved into recruiting, but something always felt off. I was helping people land jobs I couldn’t speak to honestly. I didn’t want to sell a version of “culture” I didn’t believe in.

Coming back to Dewey’s felt like coming full circle—because I know this place. I know the values we live by, the experience we promise, and the community we nourish. And now, as someone who gets to help bring new people into our teams, I get to say this with confidence:

You’re not just starting a job—you’re starting something special.

First Day? Let’s Do This.

Starting somewhere new can be a lot. Maybe you’re excited, maybe a little nervous, and probably wondering what ’86’ means. That’s all normal.

At Dewey’s, we create exceptional experiences every day—and that starts with how we welcome new team members. You’ll get training, support, and a team that’s ready to work alongside you. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

We’re here to set you up for success, and to have fun while doing it.

3 Tips to Start Strong

We grow through training, goal setting, and development. You’re not expected to know everything on day one. The more questions you ask, the faster you’ll learn and the more supported you’ll feel.

We create positive energy and have fun. That energy is contagious. Bring your full self, stay present, and choose kindness. When you do, the team will meet you there.

We practice balance, hold each other accountable, and value efficiency. That means being on time, keeping your space clean, learning our pizzas and ingredients, and taking pride in the details. These small habits build your confidence—and build trust with your team.

What It’s Like to Work at Dewey’s

Our Purpose shows up in real ways. We listen. We communicate with transparency and respect. We support each other like a true team. We lead with warmth, inclusion, and equity. And we believe you can love your work without sacrificing your life outside of it.

You’ll be given feedback—but also encouragement. You’ll be challenged—but also celebrated. And you’ll always be part of a team that believes in you.

Looking for the Right Fit? Here’s Our Advice.

If you’re early in your career—or just searching for something that feels more meaningful—it can be easy to focus on things like pay, title, or perks. Those matter! But they aren’t the whole story.

Start by asking yourself… “What’s most important to me?”

-> If it’s money, that’s valid—but are you willing to sacrifice work-life balance or team culture for it?

-> If it’s growth, what kind of support and feedback do you need to get there?

-> If it’s belonging, what kind of environment helps you feel safe and seen?

Once you know what you value most, look for places that align—and ask real questions to find out. Don’t be afraid to ask things like:

-> How does the team handle tough days?

-> What kind of feedback and development can I expect?

-> What’s the culture like beyond the job description?

-> Do people bring their full selves to work here?

At Dewey’s, we believe you shouldn’t have to check part of yourself at the door to do great work. We nourish our community by honoring the individuals within it—and we work hard to create exceptional experiences every day, for guests and for our team.

If that sounds like something you want to be a part of, we’d love to meet you.
